DESIGN RELATION TO THE SITE

The access from the surrounding is described at the picture. The point to have this building at the site, is to connect different areas, and create shortcut, so that the HSW site can also be the core area to go from one to another area.

Looking at sporting centres for Brisbane, which is becoming the symbol of sport in Brisbane, hopefully this sport center can be determined as an icon for the city for upcoming times. The sport center can be the symbol of modern ideas of Brisbane to reach its plan for being healthy and vibrant city.

BUILDING BREAKDOWN

From the building, i breakdown it in order to communicate the design tectonic and the materials. The built area made to provide the activity of the sport center.

The first skin is the structural skin that made from steel. and create the sense of parasitic and stiffness of the building. The second skin, is the fulfilling materials for the structural skin. I put the glass in order to get daylighting from the site. The corrugated metal also used in order to give lighter weight to the structure while maintaining it into ventilation for the building.

SPACE VIEWS

My design intention is combining both stiffness dimension of sporting area into more likely to be active and fluid sensation. I tend to create people to experience height, just like the one i developed in my folie. The jogging track is the feature that become my parameter in this building. People can experience the new path for jog, while exploring the HSW area.

DESIGN PROPOSAL

Those are the perspectives i proposed for the design. In this design, i am trying to get its strong and active combination and make it grows out parasitically. The point parameter is that i am using the parasitic phase i developed my design intention for the sport center building, while creating active and fluid space for the people.

DESIGN SKETCHES

 From the sketches i developed my initial design for the sport center. Especially for the skin of the building which is the result of parasitic phase that i posted earlier, along with the 3D jogging track going around the building.

SPACE RELATIONS

The first diagram is my initial idea for the space needed for the area. The sports hall is located at the entrance for the building to welcome people and create the mass. Amenities which is the area for locker room and shower room, located between the sport hall and the gym. Green field location consideration is planned at the rest of the area because it needs bigger space to put on, along with the amenities.

 From the sectional diagram, I want to communicate the space arrangement for the building. Sports Hall and Gym  are arranged 3 meters above the ground in order to keep from the flood, and get the best thermal condition for the site, which is considered cool and dry. The ones that made by dotted line are the possible addition of space at the area. The need of office and storage in a sport complex is essential, while the space below the sports hall can be used as leisure area. Ferry terminal which is more likely to be functioned as shelter is also the possible space to be created on.

PARASITIC PHASES

Consider the massing as host, i tried to make initial parasitic area from the massing. Inspired by the cycle of parasite, i developed my initial design. The first level is the encystation of the area, the parasite stick with the host and bind into it. After that, the parasite go through excystation phase which parasite emerges three times it size and having wider areas of infection. Finally the last stage of parasitism is that the parasite going through blood stream, infecting the whole sites and dominate the important area of the host.

In order to go deeper to the design, i have understandings on what parasite and parasitism are. From the dictionary, i found different meanings of parasite and parasitism. Moreover, from the meanings i tried to connect it to the site.

Parasite as we know, is a living organism that obtain nutriments from the host. In this case, HSW as the axis that connects Kangaroo Point, Fortitude Valley, New Farm, Spring hill and the CBD. This is a very potential area to invite people from 5 different areas, into one strong community. Finally, an intimate association between organisms can be considered as Parasitism. As example, story bridge can be the area of parasitism, because it connects people from Kangaroo Point to other areas and simultaneously related to each other. By the understanding of access from Story bridge, HSW can be stated as the area of parasitism, and see the story bridge as the host.
 
This condition is known as metapopulation, all the parasites of one species in a host population (wikipedia.com). The areas around the HSW can be seen as host population, while the parasite or the organism can be the initial design of the building (sport center).
