DESIGN PRECEDENCE

From the diagram, i am trying to seek for input on parasitic architecture which give me idea on how it exists. Starting from the initial idea and the folie, i am breaking down and dividing the function of sport centre into the suitable characteristics. In case to enlarge the folie, i am seeking for precedence, which connects with the idea of my folie. My building proposal could be the combination of both concept of the precedences.

MASSING AND PLANNING

MASSING 1. SPACE REQUIREMENTS

MASSING 2. IDEAS REFLECTION

MASSING 3. SITE RELATED

With those massing images, I want to communicate space requirements which is needed for creating sport center. The second one, I tried to reflect my idea through the folie design, which is breaking through the hardness and put fluidness on it. Jogging track, which is usually flat, is changed into 3D jogging track, which can also work as circulation way through the space. The third massing is related to the site context. The direction of the building is being fit with the land area of HSW.

The building massing related to site.

SITE NEEDS & RELATIONS FOR SPORT CENTER PROPOSAL

From the diagrams below, I presents the demographic chart of areas around the HSW site and sports center location map.

The first diagram started with the demographic of the area around the site. From the diagram, the average age of people that live in the area 32 years old with most of the popularity with 53.9% is between 20-39. This is considered that the areas are having major proportion on productive ages. From that fact, I am trying to see the connection between the ages and charts of most popular sports in Australia. Moreover, from three samples of men, women and children, I decided to let men's number as the first consideration while women and children became the second and third consideration. After that, I picked three Australia's favourite sports. The first one I took soccer, because soccer number's become the highest amongst other. The second one I took, basketball, i planned to take basketball because it considered as moderate favourite sport for the Australians. For the last one I took athletic/track sports, because it became the lowest favorite of them all. I picked those three because, I want the sport center proposal is widely used by other people, it can have effect on increasing probably basketball and athletics number. Not only as the provider of activities, but also increasing awareness of other kind of sports.

From building typology, there will be indoor and outdoor area.Outdoor area will be provided for activities that needs to be done outside the roof, soccer, footy and rugby can possibly played at outdoor area, while indoor area can be provided for basketball, athletics, netball, footsal and badminton. For tracks, I consider 3D jogging track which is more likely interesting rather than flat one.

The second diagram, shows the radius of compilation of sport centers at the area. They are mostly outside the suburbs and distantly only near from certain suburb. For the sport center, I wanted people at the radius of 100-1000m from HSW to come to the space. It will connect people around HSW, thus people from other suburbs can blend in to the area. This is considered important as its position of HSW which is at the heart of the city.

Ninja Equation!

The first equation is the understanding of Metz Centre Pampidou by Shigeru Ban, I believed it represents my idea about parasite. Parasite always means taking nutrient from host, in architectural way i believed that parasite is the condition where basic volume of space like cube, being covered and wrapped, just like our shirt.

The second equation is the Sweden’s Sweeping Green Roofed Hillside City by Kjellgren Kaminsy Architects, there is certain pattern that used by the complex, which i prefer as water waves, and filled with space that looks like guitar shape. It is very interesting to see green roof where people can move around the area, putting greenery is one of the way to fit the natural context of an area.

The third ecuation is performing arts center  designed by Zaha Hadid. I found that organic forms can give interesting space which covered by steel and glass.

From those three equations, helped me to choose that my design can explore below or above the ground. Applied for my sport centre proposal, I can put up football field below the ground and let people to move around above the field. Thus, this equations give extended idea on how my building would work.

Folie Development

For the folie development,  I took the concept of the grown plant stone which were not recognized for the people that passing through the area. Thus, for the folie, i used materials that is blending with the context of the site. The main point is that people can recognized it by its proportion and space inside the folie. Breakthrough and hidden is the best words to describe the folie. In conclusion, I want people to experience free from stress from the area which they not recognized for the whole time, to give the value to the area. It is accessible for bike, skate and inline users, as well used by family and everybody that passed through. Breakthrough that is Hidden and fit with the context will be my main consideration to put in for the rest of the semester.

Design Process

For the design process of the folie, I picked natural feature of the area, which was the stone that grew by plants, this was very interesting because the stiffness and hardness of stone can be grown by plants which is weak. In tutorial, I made scoring models to represent both concepts. After that,  I was trying to find the interesting part of each model by tracing them. After that, I combined both tracing and finally I got my initial design. This models also represent that the area could let people to relieve their stress, to relax from their stiff and constrained stress to become free and fluid, just like the grown plants.

Walkshop Analysis on Folie Design

After two weeks of experiencing Howard Smith Wharves, I collected the data for possible folie placement.

1. Surrounding Building Function
From the analysis, I saw that the buildings near the site are mostly mixed use residentials. Thus, circulation of people around the site is very intense.

2. Type of Transportation
Since the first day I came to HSW, I found that the area become the heart of the transportation circulation. All of the vehicles that used by the city are passing through the site. Thus, the site is very potential to create a place of attraction like folie.

3. Possible Circulation
After experiencing the site over and over, I made the data about the circulation for recording the intensity of how people get into it.

4. Intensity of the Site Use
Most of the people that passed through the area were workers, students and tourists. They were using bikes, skates, inlines, or by walking.

5. Wind Circulation
I recorded the wind movement which mostly came from west, and met with little breeze from the east. It was making the site very breezy, and comfortable.

6. Thermal Condition
Trees around the site could be the sign of level of humidity during the area. I recorded it, as my experience to go back and forth the area. The area I chose was quite humid, though there was still wind moving around the area.

From that analysis, the site is very potential to put a space for relaxing and relieving stress. In fact, the most of the people used that area when they go and come back from working area. This natural features should be used better to create emphasize to the site.
